In the HVAC and industrial air filtration sector, one of the most frequently used terms in recent years has been "nanofiber". However, in market practice, there are significant differences between the technical definition of this concept and its actual performance implications. For commercial buyers and facility engineers, understanding the physics behind these advanced materials is crucial for optimizing system energy consumption and achieving superior indoor air quality.
Structures containing fibers in the 500 nm to 1 µm range, or larger fibers with only a small fraction of sub-micron elements, are often broadly marketed as "nanofibers". Although fibers below 1 µm fall within the nanometric range by definition, from a filtration physics perspective, there are meaningful differences between a structure with an average fiber diameter of 800 nm and one with 120 nm.
The difference between these sizes should not be considered simply as "five times thinner," because as fiber diameter decreases, the surface area per fiber increases in a non-linear behavior. When producing high-performance filter media, true structural differentiation comes from tight control over the average fiber diameter and the distribution width. Advanced electrospinning processes allow fiber diameter distribution to be controlled within narrower ranges compared to meltblown processes, which often suffer from wide diameter variations and structural micro-heterogeneities.
According to ISO 16890, ePM1 efficiency measures the capture of fine particles in the 0.3–1 µm size range. In this critical range, filtration efficiency is directly related to the increase in specific surface area and the probability of fiber-particle interaction.
When the average fiber diameter is reduced below 200 nm, diffusion-driven capture mechanisms become significantly stronger. A reduction in fiber diameter increases the available surface area, allowing genuine nanofiber filter media to achieve exceptional ePM1 levels with a more open porous structure. This means manufacturers do not have to artificially increase the density of the filter media to hit high efficiency targets, resulting in a perfectly balanced architectural design.
In HVAC systems, the required fan power is directly proportional to the total system pressure loss. A highly uniform nanofiber structure below 500 nm provides high retention capacity while maintaining the continuity of airflow channels.
This structural advantage translates directly into a lower initial pressure drop (dP) at the same high efficiency level. Even a 15–20 Pa difference in initial pressure drop significantly reduces annual energy costs in continuously operating commercial systems.
For today’s HVAC manufacturers and industrial filter designers, competitive advantage is no longer defined only by "high efficiency," but by the ability to deliver ePM1 performance at a lower energy cost. True differentiation is linked to microstructural control. Evaluation should not rely solely on the term "nano," but on three key parameters: average fiber diameter, fiber diameter distribution width, and the relationship between ePM1 efficiency and initial pressure drop.

High efficiency is achieved because narrowly distributed fibers below 500 nm drastically increase the specific surface area. This maximizes particle-fiber interaction probabilities, especially for diffusion-driven capture mechanisms of sub-micron urban pollutants.
A broad fiber diameter distribution can create local density variations and micro-scale airflow irregularities, which can lead to pressure drop variations. Conversely, a highly homogeneous, narrow distribution ensures smooth airflow channels, minimizing initial pressure resistance while maintaining efficiency.
Instead of just relying on the "nano" marketing label, buyers should evaluate three crucial technical parameters: the average fiber diameter, the distribution width of the fibers, and the relationship between the ePM1 efficiency and the initial pressure drop.
